Harare Deputy Mayor Muronda & Ex-MP Arrested by ZACC

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested the Deputy Mayor of Harare, Rosemary Muronda, and former legislator Shadreck Mashayamombe. Initial reports had indicated that Mayor Jacob Mafume had also been taken in by ZACC together with Mashayamombe. However, ZACC Commissioner Kindness Paradza clarified to state media that Mafume’s deputy, Muronda, had been arrested on allegations of abuse of office. “We arrested Mashayamombe but as for the Mayor, we invited him for questioning. This means the mayor at this stage is not under arrest. Having said that, investigations are currently in progress,” said Paradza. Paradza revealed that Mafume was called in by the anti-corruption body but was later released. “Deputy Mayor Rosemary Muronda and Shadreck Mashayamombe are the two we arrested. As I said the mayor was called in for questioning and was allowed to go home. He was not arrested. “Mashayamombe is facing fraud charges while the Harare Deputy Mayor faces criminal abuse of office. Two other senior council officials are still at large but net is closing in,” said Paradza. The arrest of Muronda comes as Town House officials have been embroiled in allegations of corruption.
