Dramatic Scenes as Meridian Unleashes Water from All Five Waitaki Hydro Lakes

It’s been six years since all five Waitaki hydro lakes have been forced to release water, but that’s what’s happening now – creating dramatic scenes. Meridian Energy said it expected to continue releasing water from Gate 19 at Lake Pūkaki and Waitaki Hydro Station this week due to anticipated rainfall. The power company had been releasing water from Lake Pūkaki since December 3, and said the lakes and rivers within the Waitaki catchment were very high due to recent rainfall and snowmelt. With lower than anticipated inflows over recent days, Meridian Energy added it does not expect water will need to be released at Benmore and Aviemore hydro stations. However, the deluge has come with a big warning to anyone on the lakes not to get too close. Meridian Energy head of electricity supply Brett Horwell said: "Our hydro lakes offer incredible recreational opportunities to the public, but people need to take care while water is being released from them. "The last thing we want is for anyone to be hurt or worse." Anyone camping or using any of the areas around Lakes Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki was asked to follow all signage and instructions and ensure they are a safe distance from the water’s edge. River flows and levels remained unpredictable. ECan coast and harbours manager Guy Harris said it was shocking to see how close some people have been to the water. "If you’re up against the dams you’ve got further danger of getting swamped." Meridian Energy asked people who witness anyone in immediate risk of harm to call 111. The company gave no end date for the water releases, and said it would happen when inflows reduce.
