Jacob Burns Film Center to Screen 'The Voice of Hind Rajab'

The Jacob Burns Film Center has now announced that it will begin showing “The Voice of Hind Rajab” beginning January 30. This comes after a number of Burns members requested it, including multiple residents of Croton. As we go to press, however, the Burns has not indicated how long the film will run, and it is not yet possible to buy tickets online. Hind Rajab, a five year old girl from Gaza, was killed by Israeli forces on January 29, 2024, after calling for help for several hours from the automobile where earlier six of her family members had also been killed by tank fire. She stayed on the phone with dispatchers from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society while they worked to get permission from the Israeli military to rescue her. An ambulance with two rescue workers eventually made it to the car, but they, along with Hind Rajab, were then also killed by Israeli fire. “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” a docudrama of the events based largely on a 70 minute audio recording of the girl’s increasingly desperate cries for help, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and is short-listed for the Academy Award for Best International Film Feature. Nevertheless, for the usual political reasons, including the fearful reluctance of American distributors to make it available, some time passed for the film to achieve wider distribution in the United States, despite the participation of Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix as executive producers. Eventually the independent distributor Willa took it on. Showings are now planned at a number of cinemas easily reachable from Croton, including Bronxville and Pelham (opening January 30), and Bedford (February 13.)
