Valerie Nugent Honored with "Making Waves" Award in Retirement

For more than four decades, Valerie Nugent has been providing care and leading teams in Cape Breton. A registered nurse by training, she joined Nova Scotia Health in 1984, and over the next 41 years, built a broad and diverse career as a front-line nurse and leader. Since 2010, Valerie has been director of the Cancer Care program in Eastern Zone. Officially retiring on Dec. 31, Valerie took some time to reflect on her career, and most important to her, the people she’s worked alongside and patients they’ve cared for. “I’ve been very blessed to work with people who shared the same values, vision and mission of the organization, and values that were very close to my own,” Valerie says. “Cancer care is an incredibly patient-focused environment. Every discussion and every conversation always centred on the patient. That’s what I was most passionate about, and I truly believe that focus is what led to our success as a team.” When it comes to career milestones, Valerie says advancements in cancer care — both in treatment options and infrastructure — stand out most. “There have been significant advances in radiation therapy and systemic treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Over the years, we moved from basic chemotherapy to advanced chemotherapy and now immunotherapy. “We’re seeing patients live longer and better lives because of these advancements, and that’s been incredible to witness here in Cape Breton.” She also notes the new Cape Breton Cancer Care Centre — named the Kyle Anne MacDonald Cancer Centre and set to open in 2027 — will be a game-changer for patients and families, providing greater access to treatment and diagnosis closer to home. “One of the things we hear most from patients is that they want to be able to receive care closer to home. The new centre, equipped with the latest technology, will significantly enhance care and make this possible,” she says. “There’s a bright future for cancer care in Cape Breton.” And Valerie’s leadership over the years has undoubtedly contributed. Her commitment to her team and patients earned her a Making Waves Award for Leadership Excellence last month. Valerie's response to the recognition captures the essence of her leadership — crediting the incredible people she's worked with. "I am humbled to receive this award and acknowledge this would not be possible without the amazing people that I have been fortunate to work with over my career. The support, camaraderie and networks that have developed over the years enabled me to achieve results and continued to lead these high-functioning teams." Valerie notes that the team's passion for excellence always comes back to patient care. “Patients are the beneficiaries of this high-quality culture. The resiliency within the team is palpable, their ability to adapt and pivot when required speaks to their desire to succeed and achieve quality results for the patients we serve, here at home.” As Valerie concludes a rewarding and successful career, she knows the team is well positioned to continue providing high-quality care while supporting one another. “The team is young, innovative and working within a culture of trust that they can carry forward. That’s a legacy I’m very proud of.” Her advice to other leaders is to lead by example and recognize their most valuable asset: their team. “Never underestimate the value of an empowered, high-functioning team in delivering results.” Valerie’s leadership and passion for making a difference will continue to benefit people in her community as she transitions into retirement. While she looks forward to spending more time with family and friends, she is also eager to find new ways to give back. “I’ve had an amazing 41-year career. It’s been successful, fulfilling and supported by great teams. I also still have a lot to offer, so I’m hoping to serve on boards, volunteer and continue contributing to the community.” Congratulations to Valerie on an incredible career and her Making Waves award!
