US Envoy Sergio Gor Concludes Mumbai Visit, Bolstering India-US Ties

Newly appointed US ambassador to India Sergio Gor wrapped up his first trip to Mumbai, during which he held meeting with top government and industry officials. The visits underscore Gor's push to deepen Washington's ties with New Delhi. Gor held meetings with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Reserve Bank of India governor Sanjay Malhotra. The top US representative in India also met top businessmen during his trip to the country’s financial capital, including Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, Tata Sons chief N Chandrasekaran, and officials from the pharma sector. “We’re building strong momentum across trade, technology, education, energy, and resilient supply chains as the US–India partnership continues to grow,” Gor said in a post on X. The talks with Fadnavis centred on deepening bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including trade, investment, technology, manufacturing, energy, healthcare and entertainment. Both sides underlined Maharashtra’s rising stature as a key economic engine and an entry point for international partnerships. In a post on X, Ambassador Gor said the conversation underscored aligned strategic interests and a clear intent to collaborate more closely. He termed the engagement constructive and voiced confidence about expanding cooperation going ahead. Gor also visited the 26/11 terrorist attack memorial site at the Taj Mahal Palace and praised US President Donald Trump for the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India. “May such a tragedy never happen again. I visited the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel remembering the 166 innocent lives lost, including 6 Americans. I honor the valor of the Indian security forces and am proud that under President Trump, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning these horrific attacks,” he said in another post. Rana was extradited from the United States in April 2025, is currently in judicial custody following NIA interrogation in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. On January 14, Gor presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu during an official ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. At the ceremony, Ambassador Gor formally became the 27th United States Ambassador to India. Ambassador Gor said, "I look forward to working closely with the Government of India and the Indian people to advance our shared priorities in defense, trade, technology, and critical minerals, and to further strengthen the partnership between our two great democracies."
