Mason Greenwood's England recall remains unlikely, with manager Thomas Tuchel stating the player is not in his thoughts. Greenwood, performing well for Marseille, has a complex international eligibility situation, having considered representing Jamaica. Manchester United retains a significant 40% sell-on clause in his Marseille contract, potentially benefiting them from any future transfer.
Mason Greenwood's international career has been in limbo for several years
Mason Greenwood's success at club level has failed to replicate itself on the international stage. The ex-Manchester United striker has proved to be one of Ligue 1's most potent finishers since signing for Marseille in 2024.
The 24-year-old won the league's Golden Boot last season, alongside Ousmane Dembele, with the pair both netting 21 goals. Greenwood has continued his form in front of goal during the current campaign, leading the league in scoring with 12 goals and netting 20 across all competitions.
Prior to his £23million move to France, Greenwood was charged with rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022 before the charges were later dropped. Greenwood denied all allegations.
During his time at United, he was regarded as a player who would star for club and country for years to come and even made his England debut in 2020 - his sole cap for the Three Lions.

However, his legal issues ended his international career with England, and he has yet to be recalled to the squad. Ahead of Euro 2024, former national team boss Gareth Southgate said outright he wouldn't consider Greenwood, and current manager Thomas Tuchel previously admitted the forward was "not in his thoughts".

The German said last year: "I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment, and he is not in our thoughts for our team."
Despite Greenwood filing papers in order to switch his international eligibility to Jamaica, he's yet to make his debut for the country, even after he was as expected to be available for selection for Jamaica's World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago last September.
With 42 goals in 62 games for Marseille, Greenwood has certainly been a bargain for the French giants, who paid United an extra £5m last season due to clinching Champions League football.
The financial victories from selling Greenwood could yet still continue for the Red Devils, who inserted a staggering 40 per cent sell-on clause in his Marseille contract. Should the Ligue 1 side sell him, United will receive almost half of the profit from the transfer fee.
After playing a part in his side's 2-1 win against Newcastle United in November, an English opponent awaits Greenwood again as Liverpool travel to the Stade Velodrome this Wednesday. The striker has scored just once against the Reds in five games, with his lone strike coming in a 3-2 win for United against their rivals in the FA Cup fourth round in 2021.
