TISS Students Urged: Focus on Education Amidst Controversy

A sessions court has advised Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students to prioritize their education and careers over becoming embroiled in controversies. This advice comes as the students face criminal charges for attending an event marking the death anniversary of G N Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor. On Monday, the court extended interim protection from arrest for the students while hearing their pre-arrest bail applications. The Trombay police have accused the nine students of commemorating Saibaba, who was acquitted in March 2024 of alleged Maoist links but passed away in October of the same year. Charges against the students include slogans in support of Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, as well as causing enmity and unlawful assembly. Additional sessions judge Manoj B Oza urged the students to focus on their studies instead of legal battles, as their interim protection continues until the next hearing on February 5.
