Police allege teacher charged with child sex offences gave birth to student’s baby
A West Australian teacher currently facing child sex offences relating to a student has given birth to a child who police believe was fathered by her alleged victim. Naomi Tekea Craig, 33, was charged by child abuse detectives late last year, accused of persistently engaging in sexual conduct with a student at her school in Mandurah, a coastal city south of Perth, between 2024 and 2025. She was charged with three more offences on Wednesday, including sexually penetrating a child over 13 and under 16, indecently dealing with a child over 13 and under 16, and indecent dealings with a child under 13. Craig will return to court to face the new charges next week. The teacher was pregnant at the time of her arrest, and on Wednesday Blanch confirmed a DNA test had been conducted after she gave birth. Asked if it was believed the victim was the father, he said: “I believe so.” “I think I must be very careful,” Blanch said. “The matter is before the court, but I think more generally it is a very serious and heinous offence. “We should all be shocked by any of these allegations that young people are being preyed upon in our community. “And again, I’m not going to speak specifically to this matter, but if it is by a person in the position of authority or care of another, it is even more aggravating.” Premier Roger Cook agreed the charges were serious. “I think we’re all confronted and disturbed by the reports that we’ve seen,” he said. “Now I do stress that this matter is before the courts, so I won’t make further comment in relation to the details.” In a letter to parents, Frederick Irwin Anglican School said the woman had been suspended from her role as a teacher while the charges progressed through the courts, and had been instructed not to visit the school grounds. The letter said it was not believed there was any need for concern regarding other children at the school. Craig was initially charged last year with two counts of sexually penetrating a child over 13 and under 16 as a person of authority, possession of child exploitation material, and persistent sexual conduct with a child under 16.
