PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has conferred the honour of a State Funeral on the late Mathias Kanana Hishoono, a veteran of the National Liberation Struggle.
“President Nandi-Ndaitwah recognises Hishoono for his immense contribution to the consolidation of the gains of independence and democracy, as well as to the development of the country. His legacy remains a symbol of selfless commitment to the ideals of freedom and independence,” the Namibian Presidency added.
The Presidency said that this decision was made in terms of Article 32 of the Namibian Constitution and under the powers vested in the President by Sub-Article (3)(h) of that Article, read together with Section 3(1) of the Conferment of National Honours Act, 2012 (Act No. 11 of 2012).
Hishoono passed away on 14 January 2026 and will be buried on Saturday, 24 January 2026 at the Eenhana Shrine, Eenhana Town, Ohangwena Region.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Namibia, President Nandi-Ndaitwah extends sincere condolences to the entire bereaved family, comrades, and friends, and wishes them strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the Presidency added.
