Sri Lanka's New Envoy Meets Putin, Ignites Colombo-Moscow Momentum

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Shobini Gunasekera, formally presented her Letters of Credence to Russian President Vladimir Putin on 15 January 2026 at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow. The solemn ceremony—conducted with full adherence to long-established protocol—was attended by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Foreign Policy Advisor Yury Ushakov, underscoring the event’s significance for Russia’s global diplomatic engagements. Ambassador Gunasekera was among the envoys representing 32 countries who were officially received by President Putin. Addressing the assembled diplomats, the Russian leader reiterated Moscow’s readiness to deepen ties with partner nations, pledging constructive engagement aimed at strengthening and consolidating bilateral cooperation. He emphasized Russia’s continued interest in expanding relations across regions, guided by principles of mutual respect, strategic partnership, and shared global responsibility. Following the formal proceedings, an informal interaction allowed President Putin to personally greet the diplomats. During this exchange, Ambassador Gunasekera conveyed the warm regards of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and the people of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation. She expressed Sri Lanka’s gratitude for Russia’s solidarity in the aftermath of the devastating Ditwah cyclone, describing Moscow’s support as a gesture deeply valued by the Sri Lankan people. Ambassador Gunasekera also reaffirmed Colombo’s intention to renew and deepen the bilateral relationship, building on decades of cooperation and friendship. President Putin welcomed these sentiments, assuring Russia’s commitment to further strengthening ties.
