18 January 2026 - Former Lagdera member of parliament Mohamed Muktar Shidiye on Sunday presented his application to Aulihan Council of elders vowing to bring change in the devolved functions. Shidiye, whose hundreds of supporters turn up for the events held at a Garissa town hotel vowed to solve perennial challenges including water, health, roads, environment and mass unemployment of youths. “So many children do not have jobs that even force them to look for greener pastures and are detained, tortured and even killed in Libya,” said Shidiye shortly after presenting his application. The former two-term Lagdera lawmaker said he will work towards bringing people of Garissa together without considering clan and political affiliations, noting that his record is clean and speaks for itself. “Today I presented my application to Aulihan elders. I believe they will do justice by considering the plight of Garissa County people, I have faith that if elected I will bring the much needed change in the county,” he said. The former Botswana ambassador used the opportunity to drum up support for President Ruto’s re-election saying Ruto is age mate having completed the university at the same time, he added that the President is a known workaholic who has brought a lot of development in the country. “People of Garissa please give your full support to President William Ruto’s two terms, he has done a lot for the people of Garissa and people of Northeastern,” he said. On the ongoing drought, Shidiye appealed to President Ruto to help communities reduce the effects of the dry spell that continues to ravage parts of Northern Kenya. In 2022 general elections the same council of elders prevailed upon Shidiye to step down in favour of current Governor Nathif Jama, many locals called on the Aulihan council of elders to officially endorse Shidiye since they promised him their support in these upcoming general elections. The Aulihan Council of elders led by Ugas Hamud Sheikh confirmed that they had previously asked Shidiye to step down in favour of Nathif Jama. After presenting his applications, Shidiye who was accompanied by Lagdera member of parliament Mohamed Abdikadir Hussien and host of MCAs addressed residents along Kismayu road. MCAs who accompanied him included Mohamed Abdi Farah (Dadaab), Abubakar Mohamed Khalif (Galbet), Aden Odowa (Dertu), Ahmed Abdirahman (Liboi) amongst others. Several individuals aspiring for various positions including Mohamed Ali locally known as Amin computer and Abdikheir Dubow both gunning to be Dadaab member of parliament were also with Shidiye.
