A second woman has filed a sexual misconduct allegation against a boxing coach in Munster. Gardaí are investigating. This follows an earlier allegation of assault against the same coach by a young female athlete. The coach has denied the accusations and has been stood down from his role pending investigations by both gardaí and the Irish Athletic Boxing Association.
It is understood the alleged incident did not take place in the boxing club which the man has been involved with for years. Gardaí said they are continuing to investigate an alleged incident reported to them.
“As this is an ongoing investigation, this office is not in a position to provide further information at this time,” the statement said.
The allegation comes after the man was also formally questioned by gardaí this year over the alleged assault of a young female athlete a number of years ago.
The Irish Examiner reported in March that the man was stood down after a formal complaint was made to governing body, the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA).
Boxing officials have now confirmed a second complaint by a different woman has been made to gardaí about the same coach involving alleged sexual misconduct. A formal investigation is ongoing with the IABA.
In relation to the younger woman, the IABA said earlier this year that it "cannot comment on any individual matters. As a matter of course, the IABA operates a robust safeguarding protocol which, in instances where complaints are made, includes investigation, standing down of individuals if applicable, and referral to Tusla and/or gardaí, if applicable".
It is understood the boxing coach has denied the allegations and remains stood down.
Tusla is also involved in the young athlete’s investigation but said it cannot comment on individual cases.
