NEWS RELEASE SAULT STE. MARIE PUBLIC LIBRARY ************************ The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library is upgrading its core technology by transitioning to a new Integrated Library System (ILS). The library will replace its current TLC system — first implemented approximately 15 years ago — with Symphony, a modern ILS developed by SirsiDynix. The transition will begin on Jan. 21, with the new system officially launching on Jan. 26. An Integrated Library System is the behind-the-scenes software that supports many essential library services, including managing collections, patron accounts, checkouts, holds and online access. While most of the transition work will take place in the background, the upgrade represents a significant investment in modernizing the library’s operations and introducing a more robust platform with enhanced features, improved reliability, stronger cybersecurity protections and better long-term sustainability. The library will remain open throughout the transition. However, between Jan. 21 and Jan. 26, it will operate in offline mode. During this time, materials can still be checked out, but some services — including placing holds, renewing items, updating patron records and registering new library cards — will be temporarily unavailable. Patrons may also experience brief interruptions to the online catalogue and will not have access to their online accounts. Patrons whose library cards may be expired are encouraged to request renewals before January 21 to help minimize service disruptions. Online services such as OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla should have minimal disruptions for those with active library cards. Full services, including item renewals, holds, interlibrary loan requests and online account access, will be restored following the January 26 launch. The ILS project was initiated by the library board in the spring of 2025 to better position the library to meet the evolving needs of the community. Compared with the previous system, Symphony offers a more modern, flexible and cost-effective platform, with expanded features that will support improved service delivery both now and into the future. Frequently asked questions about the new system and the transition process are available on the library’s website at https://ssmpl.ca/using-ssmpl/new-ils/. Additional updates will be shared through the library’s website, social media channels and in-branch signage. Patrons with questions or concerns are encouraged to speak with library staff.
