Quesnel Air Quality Advisory Issued Due to Elevated Particulate Matter

An air quality warning is in effect for Quesnel as elevated levels of fine particulate matter impacts the community. The warning, issued today, Jan. 19 by the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks is expected to stay in place until weather conditions change or local emissions are reduced. According to the government’s website, current conditions are allowing fine particulate matter to linger in the air, increasing potential health risks for residents. Health authorities note that exposure to fine particulate matter is especially a concern for infants, older adults, individuals with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, heart disease and diabetes, or respiratory infections, and those who are pregnant. Those with underlying medical conditions or acute illnesses are advised to postpone or limit strenuous outdoor activity while the warning remains in effect. Residents experiencing symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheezing, should follow the guidance of their health care provider. Authorities note that staying indoors, particularly with clean, filtered air, can help reduce exposure. An update advisory is expected to be issued on Jan. 20 and will be posted on the province’s Air Quality Warnings webpage.
