VP Gibran Accelerates Civil Servant Relocation to Nusantara

Jakarta. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has instructed government agencies to accelerate the relocation of civil servants to Nusantara, Indonesia's future capital in East Kalimantan. The directive was conveyed by Vice Presidential Special Staff Tina Talisa during an inspection of the Core Government Area (KIPP) in Nusantara on Monday. The visit was aimed at assessing the readiness of offices, housing, and supporting infrastructure ahead of the phased transfer of state employees. “Vice President Gibran has given strong support and is actively encouraging the Vice Presidential Secretariat to begin operating in Nusantara in stages,” Tina said in a statement released on Wednesday. “This is not merely a plan, but a concrete step to accelerate the functioning of the new seat of government.” During the visit, officials from the Vice Presidential Secretariat and the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) reviewed several key sites, including the Vice Presidential Palace, ministerial residences, the OIKN headquarters and the Presidential Palace. The inspections were intended to verify the readiness of workspaces and official housing before civil servants are relocated in the near term. Beyond office readiness, discussions also covered the development of supporting urban features, including eco-tourism potential and the implementation of clean energy systems, which are central to Nusantara’s vision as a sustainable capital. Tina said further coordination would be required to ensure these elements are implemented effectively. The push from the vice president comes as President Prabowo Subianto also visited the site last week to inspect construction progress and assess the readiness of key infrastructure.. Nusantara, officially designated Indonesia’s future capital in 2022, is being developed to replace Jakarta as the country’s administrative center. Under current plans, the relocation of government institutions and civil servants will take place gradually as infrastructure is completed. By 2028, Indonesia is expected to operate with two capitals. Jakarta will remain the country’s legal capital and economic hub under Law No. 2/2024, while Nusantara is set to function as the political capital, hosting the executive, legislative and judicial branches. Construction momentum has accelerated in recent months, with legislative and judicial complexes entering the building phase in late 2025.
