Interior Ministry Renews Curfew for Nkwanta Township Following Security Advice

The Ministry of Interior has renewed the curfew imposed on Nkwanta Township and its surrounding communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, following advice from the Oti Regional Security Council. The renewed curfew, issued by Executive Instrument, takes effect from Monday, January 19, 2026, and will run daily from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. In a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government urged chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth and residents of the area to exercise restraint despite the challenges confronting the community, and to adopt peaceful and non-violent means in addressing their concerns in the interest of restoring calm. Authorities also announced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within Nkwanta Township and its environs. "Any individual found in possession of such items will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law." The Interior Ministry reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area, calling on residents to cooperate fully with security agencies as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.
