Nintendo Switch 2 Crushes Sales: 3.7 Million Units in Japan 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to be the fastest-selling console in Japan's history, moving 3.78 million units in 2025. That's according to data collected by Famitsu (via VGC), which found that the Switch 2 accounted for over half of all home consoles sold in the country last year. The original Switch came in second with 1.52 million units sold, followed by PlayStation 5 (879,204 units), Xbox Series X|S (31,226 units), and PlayStation 4 (1,807 units). PS5 sales were down 60% in 2025, despite the launch of a cheaper, Japan-only version of the console. The Switch 2 reached almost one million units sold across Japan within the first week of release, making it the country's biggest console launch to date. Sales of the console reached the highest global figure of any Nintendo platform in the first four months of launch, surpassing 10.36 million units. Looking at physical games, Nintendo games took up nine of the top ten places on Famitsu's chart for the 21st consecutive year. Mario Kart World came out on top at 2.66 million units sold, followed by Pokémon Legends Z-A with a combined total of 2.5 million units across Switch and Switch 2. Capcom's Monster Hunter Wild was the only non-Nintendo title in the Top 5 selling 838,319 units on PS5, followed by Super Mario Party Jamboree on Switch with 498,397 units. The Switch 2's second console exclusive, Donkey Kong Bananza, ranked at No.6 with 435,206 unit sales. Japan's domestic games market is estimated to have increased 38.8% from ¥301.32 billion ($1.9 billion) in 2024 to ¥418.13 billion ($2.64 billion) in 2025. The majority of this growth is from hardware sales, rising 49.3% from ¥189.4 billion ($1.19 billion) to ¥282.69 billion ($1.74 billion). Nintendo's latest financial results reported a 110% jump in sales to ¥1.1 trillion ($6.9 billion) and a 19.5% increase in operating profits to ¥145.1 billion ($916 million).
