Government Investigates Shockingly Low MMT Bus Auction Prices

The government has launched an investigation into reports surrounding the auction of over 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses under the previous administration. According to the Deputy Managing Director of MMT, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, these buses were auctioned in the period leading up to the 2024 general elections, with some reportedly sold for as little as GH¢2,500. Speaking to reporters on January 19, 2026, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, said the government has already begun probing the matter to determine whether the auction process was conducted in a merit-based and transparent manner. “It is not something I can simply say was overpriced or not. These were auctions that were carried out, and if we need to question or review them, I have instructed all management and boards to take a second look at the process. We will then see what happens next,” he stated. Bukari also emphasised that the relevant authorities are still working on the matter to ensure clarity and transparency in Metro Mass Transit’s operations. Addressing the ongoing transport challenges in the country, the minister assured of the swift and timely intervention by the government to ease the current situation faced by commuters. “The reality today is how we improve the situation at hand. We have introduced measures in collaboration with the unions, and I believe these will bring some relief to our commuters,” he said.
