Three Trapped Following Mine Shaft Collapse in Filabusi

POLICE have confirmed a mine accident at Hebenia Mine in Filabusi where three people remain trapped after a shaft collapsed on Saturday. In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said two of the victims were working underground when the collapse occurred, while a third victim, the wife of one of the miners, was caught in the tragedy as she rushed to the scene. “The ZRP confirms a mine accident which occurred on 17 January 2026 at Hebenia Mine, Filabusi, where three people were trapped after a mine shaft collapsed,” Nyathi said. “Two victims were working inside the shaft, while the third victim, who is the wife of one of the two miners, was outside preparing food. Upon noticing ground movement, she rushed to the shaft and was also trapped.” According to police, the collapsed shaft is approximately 11 metres deep, and rescue efforts are ongoing. “The shaft is approximately 11 metres deep, and the victims are still trapped,” Nyathi said. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or provided details on the condition of those trapped as efforts continue at the site.
