Mercedes S-Class Gets Powerful New V8 Engine

In amongst all the talk of a “superbrain behind every drive” and “a refined range of electrified powertrains,” Mercedes-Benz has quietly announced that the upcoming S-Class will also be offered with a flat-plane crank V-8 engine. The new M177 Evo engine will have its own unique firing order, and updates to its hot V-mounted turbochargers for a more rapid response. Peak power is 573 hp with a mighty 553 lb-ft of torque in the mild-hybrid S580 model. The four-liter M177 has already seen service in the AMG S63 and Aston Martin’s DB12, DBX, and Vantage, however those use a more conventional cross-plane crank format. Flat-plane motors typically have the advantage of being lighter and revvier, but at the expense of refinement. However, Mercedes-Benz claims that the M177 Evo will provide “seamless power delivery, energy recuperation and exceptional smoothness, while meeting the latest emissions standards and ensuring a tranquil cabin experience.” Presumably the same motor will be further fettled to be installed in the AMG S63 when it arrives a little down the line. Other engines offered will be an update of the six-cylinder M256 motor, in 2.5-liter (for the S450) and three-liter capacities (for the S500). Mercedes hasn’t quoted power figures but says the S500 will turn out up to 472 lb ft of twist thanks to an “overtorque” function. The plug-in hybrid version, known as the S580e, gains more electric oomph, and a battery-only range of more than 60 miles. A trio of diesel will also be available, each with a mild-hybrid 48-volt electric system, and more potent integrated starter-generator. Air suspension will be standard across the S-Class range, along with rear-axle steering, and major improvements to the MB.OS. Mercedes calls it the car’s “superbrain,” and it “powers every domain—from assistance to infotainment to driving performance—delivering faster processing, greater computing power and a deeply integrated experience.” The S-Class is currently undergoing final road testing in Germany and will make its official debut on January 29.
