Mayon Volcano Activity: PHIVOLCS Reports 19 Volcanic Earthquakes

Mayon Volcano in Albay logged 19 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Monday. A total of 297 rockfalls and 57 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were also recorded to have occurred from 12 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin. A crater glow remains to be seen by the naked eye. The volcano also emitted 3,788 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Sunday. Plumes were also observed at the volcano, though obscured from view. PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Mayon Volcano. This is because the volcano continues to pose hazards such as: rockfalls or landslides or avalanches; ballistic fragments; lava flows and lava fountaining; PDCs; moderate-sized explosions; and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall. PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the six-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) should not be allowed. Entry without vigilance into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) should likewise be prohibited, PHIVOLCS said.
