The Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze, has raised serious concerns over the continuous installation of rival chiefs in the Mafi Traditional Area, warning that the practice is undermining unity and slowing development.
Speaking at the 77th annual Mafi Hogbetsotso festival in Adidome, he lamented that divisions among chiefs and their subjects were affecting communal labour and other collective initiatives. He described the situation as “unfortunate and sad,” urging the Mafi Traditional Council to put an end to the practice and ensure due diligence in the selection and installation of chiefs.
The festival, celebrated in remembrance of the historic exodus of the Ewe people from Notsie in present-day Togo, brought together chiefs, queen mothers, and citizens from across the Mafi State. It was held under the theme “Fostering Unity, Peace, and Love for Development.”
Other speakers, including the Dufia of Mafi Adidome, Togbe Kakaklolo Agyeman V, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie, called on the youth to embrace dialogue, unity, and agriculture as pathways to progress. Businessman Francis Kofi Kpolu, who chaired the event, also urged the youth to eschew violence and remain patient in pursuing their aspirations.
