In an update on the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Services website they have said: "One of the vehicles involved in the collision caught fire and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. The motorway was closed in both directions while the fire was being extinguished.
They added: "Shortly before 4pm the westbound side of the motorway was reopened. Ambulance crews on also at the scene assessing one person involved in the collision. No one was trapped in their vehicle. The eastbound side of the motorway is expected to remain closed for some time."
