M1 Reopens After Serious Yorkshire Crash, Air Ambulance Attended

Despite previous indicators showing that the closure would remain in place well into rush hour, investigators from South Yorkshire Police have now wrapped up at the scene. Recovery efforts have also been completed, resulting in the carriageway closure coming to an end. The M1 southbound between J33 (Rotherham) and J32 (M18) is now open to traffic in the wake of the two J33 crashes, which occurred on the J33 slip lane and on the motorway itself. A National Highways spokesperson shared the update in a social media post to commuters. "Traffic [is] flowing freely. Safe travels this morning," they wrote. An earlier crash for northbound commuters between junctions J19 and J20 has now also cleared. The current estimated reopening time given by National Highways is around 8am on Wednesday, January 21 - although this may be subject to change. Diversion route now in effect for southbound commuters National Highways confirmed it has initiated its diversion protocols in relation to the serious crash that occurred at about 6pm. Crews were alerted to the incident just before 6.30pm, and investigators remain at the scene to figure out what led to the serious incident. A National Highways spokesperson told the Mirror that "road users are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs" in the area.
