Luke Chambers Seals Loan Move to Charlton from Liverpool

Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers has sealed a half-season loan to Charlton, joining the Championship side after recovering from a long-term back injury. Chambers made his return for Liverpool’s U21s after nine months out in December, proving his fitness in the month to follow with two further appearances. After playing just over an hour in the 7-0 thrashing of Arsenal on Saturday, the 21-year-old has now departed for another loan spell. He joins Nathan Jones’ Charlton, who are currently 18th in the Championship after a 2-1 defeat to Derby on Tuesday evening. His switch to The Valley adds a versatile option to Jones’ squad, with Chambers capable of playing as centre-back or further forward as a wing-back in Charlton’s 3-5-2 system. It follows a successful half-season with Kilmarnock and then two loans with Wigan, the latter ending early after a recurring back injury. Chambers underwent treatment at the AXA Training Centre and has now been deemed fit enough to spend the remainder of the campaign playing senior football. Charlton are captained by former Liverpool academy defender Lloyd Jones, while they recently signed another left-back with Jerome Roussillon joining as a free agent in November. Liverpool’s loan pathways team have been busy throughout January with James McConnell, Owen Beck and James Balagizi recalled from Ajax, Derby and Forest Green Rovers respectively. James Norris‘ spell with Irish side Shelbourne was made permanent, while This Is Anfield understands centre-back Amara Nallo is among those who could follow Chambers in leaving on a temporary basis this month. Attacking midfielder Kieran Morrison is not expected to depart on loan but winger Trent Kone-Doherty is attracting wider interest.
