Tragic Lightning Strike in Kavango West Claims One Life

Staff Reporter TWO people were recently struck by lightning in separate incidents in Kanyikama Village, Mpungu constituency, Kavango West Region, resulting in one fatality. In one of these incidents, a 21-year-old man, identified as Kasera Immanuel Muyongo, died in the Kavango West region after being struck by lightning. According to the weekend crime bulletin, the incident occurred on Friday, 16 January 2026, at around 15:00, in Kanyikama Village. It is alleged that on the above date and time, the deceased was herding cattle with his cousin, a 25-year-old Namibian male, when heavy rain and thunder suddenly started. He was struck by lightning and died instantly. His cousin immediately ran home to report the incident. When family members arrived at the scene, they found his lifeless body. The body was transported to the Nkurenkuru Police Mortuary for further handling and a post-mortem examination. The cousin was also taken to hospital for a medical examination; he is confirmed to be in stable condition and has since been released. The next of kin of the deceased have been informed. In a second lightning strike incident, it is alleged that on Friday, 16 January 2026, at around 16:00, a 26-year-old Namibian woman was busy weeding a maize field with her cousin in Kanyikama Village when she was struck by lightning. As a result, she sustained severe burns to her chest and both legs. She was transported for medical treatment and is currently admitted at Nankudu State Hospital in stable condition.
