KTM 990 Duke R Revealed: New Performance Bike Launching in NZ

Uses same 947cc engine with increased output Hardware updated for better performance New Zealand and Australia launch expected soon KTM has officially revealed the performance-oriented 990 Duke R for global markets, following its first appearance at the 2024 EICMA show. Positioned above the standard 990 Duke, the R variant brings sharper performance, upgraded components and a more focused riding setup. At its core, the 990 Duke R uses the same 947cc, DOHC, parallel-twin engine found in the standard model. For the R, however, KTM has increased output to 127bhp, delivering around six more horsepower than the base version. Peak torque remains unchanged at 103Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox paired with a bi-directional quickshifter as standard. One of the most noticeable upgrades is the new 8.8-inch TFT touchscreen display, replacing the smaller screen used on the standard 990 Duke. The larger unit supports offline navigation, bringing the Duke R closer to KTM’s flagship models in terms of technology. Chassis and suspension hardware have also been revised. The 990 Duke R features fully adjustable WP Apex suspension with a rear linkage, offering greater tuning range and improved feedback. KTM has also made subtle but meaningful geometry changes, including a seat height increase to 840mm, ground clearance bumped to 210mm, and a slightly longer wheelbase, all aimed at sharper handling and higher-speed stability. The 990 Duke R will be sold as a single-seat motorcycle, with pillion equipment available as an optional extra. KTM has confirmed that the model will reach European dealerships shortly, with other markets, including New Zealand, expected to follow not long after.
