MP Kawalya Criticizes Government Over Stalled Kiteezi Landfill Project

Rubaga North MP Abubaker Kawalya has expressed disappointment over the government's failure to allocate funds for the decommissioning and rehabilitation of the Kiteezi landfill. The required Shs.80.3 billion has not been allocated, leaving the project stalled. Additionally, there's zero allocation for establishing a new waste disposal facility in Buyala (Shs.13.68 billion) and compensating Kiteezi victims (Shs.4.355 billion). "We need to do something when it comes to waste management, last year when we had the atrocity in Kiteezi, we had a discussion over this matter during the budget process and some of us had thought that Government is going to improvise and make sure that this is a done deal, and when you look at their presentation, there is zero money, Government isn't willing to fund this program, as this Committee, we need to do something," Kawalya said. The Kiteezi landfill collapse in August 2024 displaced several families and highlighted urgent gaps in urban waste management. A $1 million grant from the Government of Japan is underway to stabilize the site, but more funding is needed for full rehabilitation.
