As she and Prince William took part in a day full of exploring Scottish heritage traditions, Kate Middleton dressed the part, dazzling in a long blue tartan coat for her second joint appearance with her husband of 2026.
The Prince and Princess of Wales visited both Stirling and Falkirk on January 20, and, in addition to her blue tartan coat—which she paired with a black turtleneck, black suede boots, and her sapphire and diamond engagement ring—the future queen wore another piece of sapphire and diamond jewelry on Tuesday that also holds sentimental value.
Kate—known as the Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, while William is known as the Duke of Rothesay—wore a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings that were given to Kate by William shortly before they married on April 29, 2011.
This pair of earrings look remarkably similar to a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings once worn by Princess Diana, a set that Kate often wears to royal engagements, as well. Those earrings are sapphire cabochon and diamond cluster earrings, and Diana wore them “as both double drops and studs over the years,” Tatler reported, bringing them out for a 1986 trip to Japan and a 1995 visit to New York City, where she paired the earrings with a matching sapphire choker.
As for Kate’s sapphire and diamond earrings from William, she made her debut outing in the pair at Wimbledon in 2011, just a few months after their royal wedding. She’s worn them on numerous occasions since, often paired with her iconic engagement ring.
Speaking of tartan, by the way—as part of their busy day out, William and Kate will visit Radical Weavers, where they will get the chance to take part in weaving tartan themselves. Part of this experience will be weaving a small piece of Radical Weavers’ latest project, “creating the world’s longest tartan scarf,” Tatler reported.
