Indonesia Aims to Be a Global Coffee Trade Hub

Indonesia is accelerating its efforts to transform from a leading producer into a central global hub for the coffee trade, according to the nation’s Ministry of Trade. The move reflects a strategic shift intended to grant the country greater influence over international market mechanisms and commodity pricing. This is reported by ANTARA . The initiative follows proposals from national trade representatives suggesting that as a top-tier producer, Indonesia should play a more decisive role in the global coffee economy. Speaking in Jakarta on Monday, the Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, confirmed that the government is actively exploring the steps necessary to establish a permanent international coffee centre within the country. “We will take steps so that Indonesia can become a coffee hub,” Santoso remarked during the inauguration of a regional trade and tourism council office. Regarding the ambition to influence global coffee prices, the Minister noted that the government would proceed with careful analysis of existing market structures. He emphasised that any shift in price-setting authority would require close coordination with international trade associations, major consuming nations, and other producing countries. Acknowledging that relocating the centre of the global coffee trade is a long-term project, Santoso highlighted that the initial phase will focus on deepening collaboration with international forums to build institutional credibility and market influence. National trade officials underscored the country’s vast capacity as a primary driver for this ambition. Currently ranked as the third-largest producer globally—surpassed only by Brazil and Colombia—Indonesia produces a wide array of premium varieties, including Arabica, Robusta, and the world-renowned Luwak coffee. Trade experts believe that by establishing a domestic trade hub, Indonesia can better showcase its diverse regional profiles and create a more robust economic environment for local growers and international buyers alike.
