Punjab University VC Orders Stern Action on Illegal Tree Cutting

LAHORE: (Tuesday, January 20, 2026): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali has taken strict notice of the illegal cutting of trees at the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre and has ordered an immediate halt to any further cutting, along with a prompt investigation into the matter. Dr. Muhammad Ali stated that illegal tree cutting is a serious offense and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. According to the spokesperson, the administration of the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre, which is an autonomous institution within the university, began cutting trees on Sunday night without informing the university administration. Upon a report from the security office, guards reached the site, stopped the tree cutting, and also intercepted a tractor-trolley loaded with timber. The Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre administration had initiated the cutting by illegally hiring a private contractor without seeking approval from the university administration or the relevant authorities. The spokesperson said that the trees that were cut also included dry trees; however, the prescribed rules and regulations were not followed even for their removal. Terming the incident very unfortunate, Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali directed strict action against those responsible. He said that while it is not possible to immediately compensate for the loss, hundreds of new trees will be planted at the same location without delay.
