The executive director of the National Planning Commission I-Ben Nashandi has been discharged from hospital and is currently recovering at his home.
He confirmed to New Era yesterday that he is doing well after being discharged from hospital on 10 January.
He had been admitted to Ongwediva Medi Park after he sustained injuries from gunshots.
Nashandi, who is also the headman of Iikokola village in the Oshikoto region, was shot during a meeting on 2 January 2026 while presiding over discussions concerning a man who had illegally occupied land.
During the same meeting, Nashandi’s assistant, Sam Pendapala Nepando, was also shot and died on the spot following a land dispute. The accused, Sinskus Johannes (59), remains in custody after the case was postponed to 18 June 2026 for further investigation.
Nashandi thanked the Namibian people at large for keeping him in their prayers and for the well-wishes for his recovery. “Thank you so much for everything. This showed unity. Let us continue praying for those who need prayers,” he said. He further stated that society has some individuals who are “sick” and intentionally harm others. Nashandi expressed disappointment with an online media outlet, Kalahari, for allegedly disseminating false information on its Facebook page claiming that he had died.
“I want to know who owns this online media company. It lacks media ethics. I condemn the misleading information,” he said. He stressed that the fake news shared by Kalahari caused panic among his family and everyone who knows him. Nashandi urged media outlets in the country to verify information before disseminating it. “People should wait for official confirmation before making information public. This should not be repeated by sharing fake news,” he added.
He thanked doctors and nurses for taking care of him during this devastating moment.
“My friend, Sam Nepando, continue to rest in peace. Your legacy will be remembered,” he said.
