His success highlights the potential in local agriculture, with guavas yielding fruit year-round and demonstrating strong market demand.

By: Loise Shiimi Onesmus Germany Ndeumane, who holds an Advanced Diploma in Banking, Finance from the Namibian Institute of Bankers, spent five years searching for a secure job. Unfortunately, he often found himself either unemployed or only able to secure low-paying positions. In an interview with Eagle FM, Ndeumane indicated that after struggling to find a better job, he decided to venture into agriculture. Currently, he earns approximately N$30,000 to N$40,000 annually from his guava fruit production. “After facing challenges for five years, I was on the verge of resorting to theft in Windhoek. However, during a holiday in the north, I began planting a few fruit trees. Despite some people discouraging me by questioning who would buy them, I persevered,” he said. Ndeumane shared how his garden continued to inspire hope, and peers in the agricultural industry provided helpful tips and ideas that kept him motivated. Speaking on his progress, he recounted how he sold seedlings for just N$10, before eventually increasing the price to N$15 as he planted more fruit trees in his garden. Within three years, he noted that he had cultivated over 20 guava trees, consistently producing fruit annually. “The great advantage of guava is that they yield fruit throughout the year, unlike many crops that are seasonal. While I have lost track of our exact annual earnings, we typically make around N$30,000 to N$40,000,” he stated. Regarding demand, Ndeumane explained how customers place orders almost immediately he advertises his harvest, indicating the popularity of guavas. He also highlighted opportunities within the guava industry, citing an inspiring example of a woman who orders guavas from him and adds value by producing jam. Concerning challenges, he noted several, with water scarcity being the most significant, especially during the summer months. He revealed that though he managed to install two water tanks, he found them to be insufficient irrigation systems. He also mentioned issues such as theft, birds, and pests. To combat pests, he explained that he applies a treatment known as ‘bluedeath’ at the tree roots, which effectively targets insects beneath the surface when watered. On a positive note, he disclosed that guava trees adapt well to the country’s climate conditions, affirming that they thrive in Namibia. In addition to guavas, Ndeumane also cultivates other fruits, including cashew nuts, custard apples, pomegranates, and pawpaws, as well as vegetables like green peppers and chilli, which he plans to harvest soon. Finally, he encouraged fellow farmers to continue producing in order to contribute to food security and create job opportunities. “I employ five individuals on my farm and work with several people in different towns to help market my products,” he added. According to the Namibia Agronomic Board, Namibia imports nearly 27 tons of fresh guava each year, with a market value of N$698,581.13.
