Garda to Face Sentencing in May for Fatal Hit and Run

A Garda has appeared before Dundalk Circuit Court to affirm guilty pleas in relation to a fatal hit and run in which a 42-year-old man was killed. Michael Ball, with an address at Drogheda Garda Station, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Niall MacEneaney and failing to keep the vehicle at the scene on the Rathmullen Road in Drogheda on 17 March 2024. Last week, Michael Ball, who is suspended from duty, was sent forward to Dundalk Circuit Court on signed pleas. Defence counsel for Ball told the court today that the defendant wanted to affirm his remorse and regret for the manner in which he responded to the incident on the day. The court heard he was "anxious" the matter be dealt with in a way that would minimise the stress and distress of Niall MacEneaney's family. The court heard that Mr MacEneaney's family was present in court today. Mr McEneaney was well known in the locality as a GAA coach and former Louth hurler. Addressing Mr MacEneaney's wife and family members, Judge Dara Hayes extended his deepest sympathies and said he was sorry they were here in these circumstances. He remanded Michael Ball on bail for sentencing on 5 May.
