FIFA Issues Stern Warning to Senegal and Morocco After AFCON Final Chaos

The FIFA president did not take long to react. Through his social media accounts, Gianni Infantino issued a firm condemnation of the events that took place at the Mohammed V Stadium. He described as “unacceptable” both the scenes in the stands and the attitude of the Senegalese delegation in leaving the pitch following the awarding of a penalty. “We strongly condemn the behavior of certain fans, players, and members of the coaching staff. Leaving the field is not an option; violence and disregard for the Laws of the Game put the very essence of our sport at risk,” Infantino stated. The FIFA president went further, reminding those involved that they have a responsibility to set an example for millions of spectators, and called on the CAF to impose exemplary disciplinary measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. For its part, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that it is already reviewing footage from the match. The organization has focused its attention on the assaults and hostile behavior directed at the refereeing team led by Jean-Jacques Ndala. Although Morocco plans to rely on the regulations to claim the title—arguing that Senegal abandoned the match before play was resumed—CAF has so far limited itself to assuring that there will be consequences for all those involved in the disturbances. The shadow of sanctions looms at a critical moment. Both national teams have already secured their places at the 2026 World Cup, and an administrative penalty or the suspension of key players could destabilize their projects.
