Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Eternal -- the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit -- has resigned from his position, according to a filing made with the stock exchanges.
The company has named Blinkit founder and CEO Albinder Dhindsa as Goyal's successor, effective February 1.
"Of late, I have found myself drawn to a set of new ideas that involve significantly higher-risk exploration and experimentation. These are the kinds of ideas that are better pursued outside a public company like Eternal," Goyal said in a letter to shareholders.
Goyal explained that operating decisions will now move to Dhindsa. "As Group CEO, he will own day-to-day execution, operating priorities, and business decisions," he said, adding that Blinkit's journey from acquisition to breakeven was handled by him and he is "more than capable of leading Eternal" as group CEO.
As part of this transition, all of Goyal's unvested stock options will revert to the employee stock option (Esop) pool.
Goyal founded Zomato in 2008 with Pankaj Chaddah, initially called Foodiebay, a platform to provide restaurant menus and reviews, before it evolved into the food delivery giant it is today.
In the past year, Goyal has ventured into multiple deeptech, longevity, and personal research ventures of his own outside of Eternal.
ET broke the news in March that Goyal has invested $20 million in LAT Aerospace, a startup founded by former Zomato COO Surobhi Das, where he serves as a non-executive cofounder. Goyal launched Continue, a health and wellness venture, focussed on extending the human lifespan. It emerged in late 2024 as a "personal wellness team" and later evolved into a research initiative. His latest venture is Temple, a new device to monitor brain blood flow. He shared a first look at the small wearable gadget on a social media platform, captioning it, "Getting there."
In a recent podcast interview, Goyal said that he had offered to step down from the top job at Zomato around the time cofounder Pankaj Chaddah exited. "For two-three years, I was ready to step down, thinking that I can't be CEO now, this is a very large organisation. Chief product officer is my game," he had said.
