Dominion at Memorial Stadium to Close Permanently on May 8

The Quidi Vidi Lake Dominion will officially be closing on May 8. In a statement to VOCM News, parent company Loblaw says the “difficult” decision to close the location comes after an “ongoing evaluation of (their) store network.” They say the change will allow them to dedicate more resources and focus on their Stavanger Drive and Blackmarsh Road locations. Unifor 597 President, Carolyn Wrice, says the closure will affect about 100 unionized grocery workers. She says their members have severance rights based on seniority, and they will be working closely to ensure every provision of the agreement is followed. VOCM News recently took to the parking lot of that Dominion to get people’s reactions to the news, including one woman who says she is concerned about the future of the old Memorial Stadium. She says she is more concerned about the history of the building than who the tenant is, and wants to know what will happen moving forward. As for what people want to see happen with the building, there are many ideas including a sportsplex, community centre, healthcare facilities, another grocery store, and affordable housing.
