Crestron's New 80 Series Touch Screens: Revolutionizing Smart Home Control

Crestron Electronics has introduced its new 80 Series Touch Screens, a family of wall-mounted and tabletop control panels designed for luxury residential, MDU, hospitality, and marine projects. A Look at the Features on the 80 Series Touch Screens Built with native Crestron Home OS integration, PoE+ and Wi-Fi connectivity, and advanced proximity sensing, Crestron says the 80 Series are engineered for the modern, connected home. That plays into the design of the screens as well, with there being 8- and 10-inch options for both wall mount and tabletop models. Crestron is quick to point out, though, that these devices are not restricted for home use, as the company states the screens are suitable for use in MDUs, hospitality suites and marine environments as well. The core ethos of the product seems to be adaptability, as evident in the connectivity options. While PoE+ offers the preferred connection method for integrators, the Wi-Fi option accepts a reality present throughout many projects, that being the case of the retrofit—which also plays into the mounting options for the screens as well. “Designers and integrators need a touchscreen that can go anywhere the homeowner wants control, without compromising the look and feel of the space,” says Georgio Galaris, manager of residential marketing at Crestron. “The 80 Series gives them that flexibility; clean, architectural wall mounts or elegant tabletop options, all with the same refined aesthetic and performance.” Radar-Based Proximity Sensing and Privacy Controls Advancements for 80 Series aren’t just relegated to form factor, however, as Crestron says the new touchscreens introduce some of the company’s most advanced sensor technologies to date. New radar-based sensing wakes the screen up whenever a user approaches it while an embedded light sensor allows the screen to adjust brightness for the best visibility in any given environment. Crestron has also added some improved microphones and speakers over older models to deliver on better paging and intercom clarity throughout the home. The microphones will also come with a physical ON/OFF button with LED indicator for an extra bit of privacy. Native integration with Crestron Home OS also provides a familiar, intuitive interface across every room. Dedicated Touchscreens in a Mobile-First World Despite the prevalence of mobile and voice control among smart home users, pro-grade control interfaces like touchscreens remain key elements of smart home systems. Part of this is due to the need of always-available control for the end user. Ironically, as many have found out over the years, app-based control via phones has proven to be less than reliable when it comes to delivering on that always-ready experience of engagement with the home. It’s not entirely because of connectivity issues within the app itself, however. Turns out, a lot of the issues boil down to just how mobile phones can be, leading to a level of inconsistency that can eat into smart home experiences so long as they’re relied on as the primary control source.
