AI-Generated SummaryAuto-generated
Torrential rain and spot flooding caused multiple significant vehicle collisions across Cork roads this morning, leading to widespread traffic delays and frustrating commutes. Emergency services cleared several incidents, including on the N25 and N20, but difficult conditions are expected to persist throughout the week with further heavy showers forecast.
And that's a wrap
Thanks for staying with us through this live blog - standing water and spot flooding remains a major issue this morning and is likely to be so again each morning this week as very heavy rain is forecast for Munster.
Please take care on the roads, dark, rainy and blustery mornings with the threat of spot flooding call for longer braking distances and lane discipline - don't end up with a damaged vehicle - or worse - on Cork roads over the coming days.
Third major incident CLEARED
A very busy morning for the emergency services in what were very difficult conditions- torrential rain and very gusty winds.
The good news - the final incident on the Tii map has been cleared - Collision on N25 between JN MIDLETON and JN CARRIGTWOHILL (Westbound)
Tii have announced all clear for Blarney and Little Island incidents
It took a while for them to update their alerts - but both the Blarney/N20 and N25 westbound beetween J2 Little Island and J1 (M8/N40) Dunkettle have now been CLEARED.
Traffic is starting to ease on the major routes as we pass peak rush hour - but a lot of people will have had a frustrating commute or school run this morning.
Another incident eastbound on the South Ring
There are now major delays eastbound on the South Ring road after J3 Bandon Road and J4 Sarsfield - looks like a collision on the inside lane which has brought traffic down to a near stop.
By our count - that's the fifth significant crash around Cork city this morning.
Difficult conditions for the rest of the week
The causes of the three major incidents on Cork roads this morning - all between 7.15 and 7.40 - may not be confirmed but standing water and spot flooding was widespread across the city and county and this has made for very difficult and treacherous conditions.
The bad news is that we can expect more heavy showers in the days to come - with the very unsettled weather lasting into next week. Take care on the roads and let's all get out the other side of January in once piece!
Heavy rain in South will slowly move up the country with spot flooding in South as heavy rain falls on saturated ground. Continuing cloudy and wet at times for remainder of week, becoming windy Friday into Saturday also.

M20/N20 - moving again
The incident between Grenagh and R617 Blarney was a multi-vehicle collision. It now appears to have been cleared as traffic is moving again in the area.
Incident at Little Island - N25
It now appears to have been cleared - traffic in moving in both directions on the N25 - to and from the Dunkettle and past Little Island.
Very heavy westbound now
Traffic is moving eastbound on the south ring - but it is heavy westbound from Mahon to the Kinsale Road roundabout.
Douglas village and Blackpool also chocca - it's not a great morning out there so if you are working from home - consider yourself very lucky!
Peak rush-hour and it's tough out there
The South Ring road is now very busy and down to a slow crawl in some sections - J10 at Mahon is backed up in both directions. This is the peak morning rush-hour and once again, it's brought serious delays for many thousands of Cork motorists, due to mutliple-vehicle collisions.
Long tailback into the Dunkettle
The M8 coming down the hill towards the Dunkettle now has a very long tailback - with traffic heading west from the tunnel towards the Kinsale Road also very slow.
It does appear to have eased heading eastbound towards the tunnel and out the other side from the Dunkettle and onto the M8. Eastbound is moving now.
Surface water on the South Ring road
There is a warning for surface water affecting the approach to the JLT eastbound - also on the lower Glanmire Road in several spots.
Torrential rain overnight has made for very difficult conditions this morning - the Tii is about to update info on the three main crashes around the city - we will have this shortly.
Very heavy now on the Kinsale Road
The tailbacks and delays are starting to have an affect in the city - there are now significant delays on the South Link Road, on the Kinsale Road, on the northside by the Blackpool shopping centre and on roads feeding into these areas.
Another crash on the N25
By our count - this means four major incidents around Cork City this morning.
The Tii is warning of a collision on N25 between JN BARRYSCOURT and DUNGARVEN. Delays in the area - take care on approach.
The very difficult weather conditions and spot flooding are causing major issues on our road networks this morning.
Now very heavy westbound on South Ring
Traffic has come down to a crawl westbound passing by Douglas - and we are starting to see knock-on effects in Douglas village and the surrounding roads - if you are on a school run or about to start - expect delays.
Conditions are very bad on the roads
Very heavy rain overnight and early this morning means there are incidents of spot flooding across the road network.
Slow down - watch out for sudden slowing or stopping ahead of you.
The latest weather reports say there are more showers on the way.
