Caldwell Construction Collapse Puts 400 Jobs on UK Building Sites at Risk

The Etruria-based firm opened in 2007 The collapse of a Stoke-on-Trent company has hit building sites across the UK. Caldwell Construction Limited entered administration last week after nearly two decades of trading. The Etruria-based firm, which first opened in 2007, is a major player in delivering groundworks for projects across Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the Midlands, North West and Yorkshire. It worked with national housebuilders and developers including the Vistry Group, which has since confirmed operatives have been pulled from it sites. Vistry is understood to have at least one construction site in Stoke-on-Trent. A Vistry spokesman told the Sun: “We have been in consultation with Caldwell Construction and it is unfortunate that this action has been taken. To ensure there are no delays to construction programmes, we are in discussion with alternative subcontractors from our preferred supplier listings to continue the works.” Administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP were appointed after attempts to stabilise the company's finances failed to secure a viable route forward. More than 400 jobs are now at risk at Caldwell Construction, which has a head office in Stoke-on-Trent and an office branch in Cheshire. It had a turnover of £58.4 million last year, however, its operating profit was reported at less than £1 million. The group has even sponsored the bet365 Stadium's South Stand since 2019, however, in recent years it faced difficulty with trading, it has been said. After working with the construction company for numerous months, a spokesperson from the administrators said: “These pressures were exacerbated at Caldwell in recent weeks, placing significant strain on cashflow and operations. “Our immediate focus is now on supporting employees and stakeholders while we assess the position of the business and its assets.”
