Parliament has stated it lacks records of MP Bryan Acheampong's enlistment, rank, and discharge from the US Army. A citizen's Right to Information request revealed Parliament did not receive documentation of Acheampong's military service, despite a previous promise to submit such details. Parliament confirmed no records of his US Army service were presented during his ministerial vetting.
Parliament has denied knowledge of the enlistment, rank and discharge of MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, from the US Army.
In a Right to Information response to a Ghanaian citizen, Parliament said that it has no records on the release of MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong giving details of his service and release from the the US Army.
The Ghanaian citizen, Edison Osbert Lartey, wrote to Parliament through the Right to Information (RTI) request, asking Parliament whether it "received from Honourable Bryan Acheampong details of his rank of enlistment and discharge from the United States Air Force (or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces)."
He also asked whether "Parliament received from Honourable Bryan Acheampong a copy of the Certificate of Honourable Discharge or any other documentation confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or a related institution)."
Edison Osborne Lartey's request may have been necessitated by Bryan Acheampong's promise to furnish and submit records of his enlistment and discharge from the US Army, when the issue came during his vetting as Minister Designate for Agriculture in 2023.
However, Parliament, in its Right to Information response, stated emphatically that it did not have such records as Bryan Acheampong did not submit to the Parliament records of his enlistment, rank and discharge, as promised.
"With respect to this request, kindly be informed that there is no record indicating that details of Honourable Bryan Acheampong's rank of enlistment or discharge from the United States Air Force, or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces, were submitted to the leadership of Parliament or to the Appointments Committee following its meeting on Monday, 20th February 2023, to vet the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture," Parliament wrote through its Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
"Similarly, there is no record to show that Honorable Bryan Acheampong submitted any document to the Committee confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or any related institution)."
"Consequently, Parliament is unable to provide certified copies or further particulars relating to the rank of enlistment and discharge, as no such documentation was presented to Parliament," Parliament further stated, adding that its response is issued in compliance with the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).
