Hero Ahmed Al-Ahmed, who disarmed a Bondi attacker, revealed he may permanently lose movement in his hand. Despite receiving support and honors, he expressed pain over negative comments regarding his medical expenses, emphasizing the personal sacrifice made to save lives. He stated his actions were driven by humanity, deeming his loss a victory for saving others.
The hero who disarmed one of the alleged shooters during the December 14 Bondi terror attack has revealed he may never regain movement in his hand.
Ahmed Al-Ahmed, who was filmed wrestling a gun out of Sajid Akram’s hands, shared a sad update on his recovery on social media on Monday night.
In a candid Instagram post, Mr Al-Ahmed said that he feels “deep sadness and pain” when he sees negative comments about benefits he’s recieved since footage of his heroic acts went viral.
“They forget that I was shot five times, and two bullets are still in my body. I live with that pain day and night.
“What is even harder is that I still cannot move my hand or fingers. Doctors have told me that I may lose movement in my hand forever. So what money or honour can ever equal this loss?
“Is there anyone among these negative people who would be willing to give up their hand for money and give me my hand back the way it was?”
Mr Al-Ahmed said he has no regrets about his actions because he was being true to his values and sense of humanity.
“For me, I don’t care about what I lost if innocent people were saved,” he said, “If the price of saving lives was losing my hand, then I see my loss as a victory, not a defeat.
His post was quickly flooded with messages of support, praising Mr Al-Ahmed for his courage and telling him not to listen to the naysayers.
Mr Al-Ahmed was recently awarded Keys to the City and honoured alongside fellow Bondi heros Gefen Bitton and Rabbi Leibel Lazaroff at a Waverly Council meeting.
He was also the recipient of a $100,000 donation to a GoFundMe campaign for his medical expenses from US billionaire Bill Ackman.
MPs pay tribute to Bondi victims
The Bondi victims were honoured in parliament on Monday with MPs standing to honour those killed.
Jewish Labor backbencher, Mark Dreyfus, recited the Mourners’ Kaddish – a Jewish prayer calling for peace in a time of loss.
He was nearly brought to tears as he addressed the Lower House and called for “unity”
“In minutes, a targeted atrocity against Jewish Australians turned a celebration of light into a moment of darkness,” Mr Dreyfus said.
“For every person murdered their families and friends left behind.
“A home left quieter, clothes still hanging in wardrobes, photos on walls that will never be updated, children asking when someone is coming home. A seat left empty at the dinner table, a laugh no longer heard.”
Meanwhile Prime Minister Anthony Albanese named all 15 victims and said: “Fifteen innocent people for whom today should be just another Monday morning.
“Another day in this beautiful country they loved, in the embrace of the family and friends they adored. Another day in busy lives, reaching passion and purpose, defined by hard work and by humour.
“Another day devoted to others serving their community, nourishing their faith. Another day of school holidays.
“Instead, our parliament comes together in sorrow to offer our nation’s condolences to the people who knew and loved them best.”
