KU Basketball Coach Bill Self Hospitalized After Feeling Unwell

Amid online rumors of an apparent health scare for KU basketball coach Bill Self, a KU Athletics spokesperson announced Monday night that Self was hospitalized Monday “out of an abundance of caution” after feeling “under the weather.” “Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt under the weather earlier today and, out of an abundance of caution, was taken to LMH Health where he received IV fluids,” a KU Athletics statement read. “He is feeling better but did not accompany the team to Boulder.” That would be Boulder, Colorado, where the Jayhawks are set to face Colorado at 10 p.m. Tuesday. It is unclear if Self will be available to travel Tuesday or if the Jayhawks will name an interim coach. A KU Athletics spokesperson declined further comment, saying the program has sent all the information it has at this time. Self has dealt with a number of health issues related to his heart in recent years. Most recently, in July 2025, Self had two stents inserted after experiencing “some concerning symptoms.” Before that, Self missed KU’s postseason run in 2023 after he was hospitalized on March 8 due to chest tightness. During that time, he also had two stents inserted. The Jayhawks lost to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that year. Self did not coach in any Big 12 Tournament or March Madness games following that incident. Self also had a heart procedure during the Fall of 2022.
