Benue State Reports Suspected Lassa Fever Outbreak with 7 New Cases

The Benue State Epidemiologist, Dr Asema Msuega, on Sunday disclosed that the state has recorded seven new suspected cases of Lassa fever. Msuega noted that samples from the affected individuals have already been collected and sent for laboratory analysis for confirmation. Following the reported suspected cases, the state government has begun immediate public health response measures to address the situation. The epidemiologist said health authorities were closely monitoring developments, adding that “samples of the seven new suspected cases have been taken for confirmation.” Msuega called on members of the public to adopt preventive measures by ensuring that food items are properly covered and protected from rodents, which are known carriers of the Lassa fever virus. According to him, simple hygiene practices can drastically reduce the risk of infection. He also assured residents that the Ministry of Health and Human Services has intensified community sensitisation campaigns across the state to curb the spread of the disease. He stated that the ministry has embarked on an awareness drive focusing on rodent control, environmental sanitation, and regular clean-up exercises, adding that special attention is being given to areas identified as Lassa fever hotspots. Msuega further assured that healthcare facilities across the state have been adequately equipped to handle suspected cases, stressing that health workers have received the necessary training and are well prepared to provide appropriate medical services. He emphasised that rapid response teams are on standby to manage any confirmed cases and prevent further transmission within communities. The epidemiologist advised residents to promptly report symptoms such as fever, weakness, or unexplained bleeding to the nearest health facility, maintaining that early detection is key to effective treatment and control of the disease. The outbreak of Lassa fever has raised renewed concern among health authorities and residents of the state.
