Barrick Bulyanhulu Mine Invests 238 Million Shillings in Segese Primary School

SHINYANGA: BARRICK Bulyanhulu Mine, operating in partnership with the Government of Tanzania through Twiga Minerals, has invested 238m/- in the construction of a perimeter fence and a matron’s house at Segese Primary School in Msalala District, Shinyanga Region. Speaking during the laying of the foundation stone, Shinyanga Regional Commissioner Mboni Mhita commended Barrick Bulyanhulu for its timely support, saying the project would significantly improve the learning environment for pupils, particularly children with special needs. “The fence and matron’s house will ensure pupils study in a safe, secure and caring environment, with full-time supervision to support their wellbeing,” Ms Mhita said. Ms Mhita was on an inspection tour of development projects implemented by the government in collaboration with development partners, including Barrick Bulyanhulu. The tour also included inspection of a dormitory for pupils with special needs, bringing the total value of education projects at the school to more than 490m/-. She praised the government’s continued investment in education in partnership with stakeholders, noting that the projects would enhance security, care and access to quality education for children with special needs. Barrick Bulyanhulu Community Relations Manager, Mr Agapiti Paul, said the project is part of the mine’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at improving the welfare of surrounding communities. “The mine will continue working closely with the government to ensure CSR projects identified by Community Development Committees are implemented to acceptable standards and deliver real benefits at grassroots level,” he said. He reaffirmed the mine’s commitment to supporting education by investing in school infrastructure to ensure children and youths access quality learning environments. Msalala District Executive Director Ms Rose Manumba said the council would closely supervise the projects to ensure timely completion. Segese Primary School Head Teacher, Mr Alpha Matambo said the new facilities would greatly improve security, supervision and care for children with special needs, while also boosting enrolment and parental confidence. He noted that the matron’s house alone is valued at 79.2m/-, adding that improved infrastructure has already raised morale among pupils and staff. The project has brought renewed hope to pupils, parents and residents of Msalala District, reinforcing the role of partnerships in expanding access to inclusive education.
