UK ‘Apprentice’ star Dargan is excelling on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ scoring 34 points in week three. His captivating performance, inspired by his animation business, marks a significant improvement. Dargan, a newcomer to dance, embraces the competitive feedback loop, drawing parallels to his business and sports background. Singer Brian Kennedy was eliminated, while Katelyn Cummins achieved the highest score.
However, the 22-year-old from Castleknock in Dublin is definitely stepping up to this new challenge, literally and metaphorically, scoring 34 out of a possible 40 points in just week three of Dancing with the Stars (DWTS).
This was a leap of nine points on his previous week’s performance.
Dargan’s ‘Movie Week’ dance to a track from Avatar, which was described by judge Arthur Gourounlian as “mesmerising”, was very much on-brand for the founder of the 3-D animation company Rendify Studios.
In fact, he described Sunday’s performance as a “full-circle” moment.
“I loved the movie, and it’s the reason that I started my business,” he said.
Speaking after last week’s show, Dargan said that this competition is something completely new for him, as he has no previous experience, but is “giving it everything”.
His professional dance partner is newly engaged Rebecca Scott, who was last year paired with celebrity chef Kevin Dundon.
Irish-Nigerian entrepreneur Dargan admitted that his competitive nature meant that he spent a lot of the earlier part of the competition comparing his progress to that of his fellow contestants, which he said is definitely “the businessman” in him coming through.
You’re only as good as your last game
He said that both the experience of DWTS and The Apprentice are similar that in receiving criticism is most important to use the feedback to progress and improve.
His desire to thrive in a competitive environment also comes from his experience as a Gaelic footballer in Castleknock, where he lived by the motto, “you’re only as good as your last game”.
In terms of music that he would like to dance to, he picked Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson, who he described as the “creme de la creme” of dance.
“Phil Lynott is also one of my heroes,” he said, and was inspired by him enormously growing up.
“I wanted to be like him,” Dargan said.
Singer Brian Kennedy was the second celebrity to be voted off the show, after his performance of a paso doble dance to The Phantom of the Opera from the musical only managed to land him 15 points.
The 59-year-old Belfast singer said that he would “chalk it up to a fabulous experience” and one that he will “never forget”.
“I’m definitely more proud than disappointed – we put the work in, and this is the way these shows go,” he said.
Kennedy has spoken openly about health struggles that he has had in recent years, and admitted that he needed a letter of permission from his heart surgeon to do the show, for insurance reasons.
“I know how to lose, I’ve been in the Eurovision!” the singer added, who finished in 10th place in the 2006 Eurovision with his self-penned track Every Song is a Cry for Love.
Rose of Tralee Katelyn Cummins scored the highest points from the judges at the weekend, with 35 points out of a possible 40.
‘Dancing with the Stars’ continues this Sunday at 6.30pm on RTÉ One
