However, French outlet L'Equipe have reported that Gomes is up for sale with Marseille keen to accelerate his exit. The French side is close to signing Himad Abdelli from Angers and Quinten Timber from Feyenoord, casting serious doubt on Gomes' future at the Orange Velodrome. The report states that the club management has informed Gomes that he must find a new club by February 2. Fortunately for the England international, one of his first teammates in senior football is the head coach at United, and he's held him in high regard before. Back in 2018, Gomes made his professional debut in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace under Jose Mourinho, before featuring in the FA Cup the following season. "I came on and Michael Carrick did everything possible to allow me to touch the ball," Gomes told The Guardian about his United debut. "Every time he had it, I could see that he was looking for me." At the time, Carrick was in the final stages of his playing career and was full of praise for the then-up-and-coming prospects. "That's exciting for me to think I can try and help them. I don't always say loads. I don't shout and scream and pull everyone here, there and everywhere. I try to help when I can. When you're playing midfield and playing that certain [anchoring] role, you're attached to everything. "When I was playing at my best you're in control of everything and that gives you understanding of what a winger wants, what a forward wants and what a defender wants."
