Revolutionary AI Tool Developed to Predict Life-Threatening Aneurysms

Researchers from seven Greek universities and institutes have developed an artificial intelligence application designed to predict life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) ruptures. AAA is the 13th leading cause of death and the third leading cause of sudden death in the West. Those experiencing a rupture face an 80% mortality rate. Because aneurysms are often asymptomatic, they frequently go undetected until a crisis occurs. Project coordinator Christos Manopoulos, director of the NTUA Biofluids Laboratory, describes the “SAFE-AORTA” tool as a “clinical decision support system.” It processes diverse patient data – including CT scans, blood flow velocities, and medical history – to create a “digital twin” of a patient’s aorta. This twin is monitored via smartwatches and physician updates.
