Old Agbogbloshie Market Set for Major Cleanup Starting February 24

The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has announced a three-day decongestion exercise at the Old Agbogbloshie Onion Market, scheduled for February 24 to 26, 2026, aimed at clearing the area of squatters and other unauthorized occupants. The site was previously cleared on July 1, 2021, when the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, with support from armed police, demolished structures and evicted an estimated 10,000 scrap dealers as part of a major clean-up exercise. However, scrap dealers have returned to the area, reclaiming portions of the land. The Municipal Chief Executive of Ablekuma Central, Frank Nkansah, addressed the issue while speaking to journalists during a visit to the site with the Greater Accra Regional Minister. “We are going to do the exercise from the 24th to the 27th of next month. We are going to do that exercise to ensure that we can decongest and break down most of the facilities that the regional minister has directed us to. “We are going to do that in collaboration with local government and RCC as a whole to ensure that the place becomes very good for commuters and even market women who are around to be able to do this. “We are only trying to structure the place very well. Those who are doing anything illegal, that one will take you out of the place. But those who are doing something legality, we are going to put a police post and other mechanism to ensure that the assembly is in full control over the exercises over there.” Read also
