By Muyid Deen Suleman, GNA‎ Kumasi Jan. 19, GNA – Victims of the devastating fire that broke out at Aful Nkwanta, in the Oforikrom Municipality, are calling on the government to help them rebuild their structures. The fire disaster, which occurred on Saturday evening, destroyed over 300 wooden structures which served as accommodation for about 700 head potters, scrap dealers and other vulnerable groups. Fire fighters from the Ghana National Fire Service, who responded swiftly to the distress call at around 5 pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026, encountered significant challenge in access the area. This hindered efforts to combat the blaze on time and thereby resulting in significant damage to properties in the area. Unexpected resistance from a mob also obstructed the entry of the fire officers to the scene, further complicating the situation and allowing the fire to spread rapidly. It is worth noting that this area has a troubling history of fire outbreaks, with similar incidents recorded in 2016, 2020, and once again this year. These past occurrences have not only displaced numerous squatters but have also led to the destruction of properties valued in the millions of cedis, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures and community awareness regarding fire hazards.‎ Mr Ebenezer Graham, Acting Asokwa Municipal Fire Commander, who confirmed the incident, said the exact cause of the fire was still under investigation. He assured the public that comprehensive reports would be issued after the completion of the investigation into the tragic incident. GNA Edited by Kwabia Owusu-Mensah/Linda Asante Agyei
